SSS Program Services That Interest You Most
• Academic Major and Career Exploration
- Your SSS advisor will assist you to explore potential majors and careers related to your interests.
• Assistance with Course Selection
- Your SSS advisor will assist you to understand course requirements for your degree and develop a semester by semester plan to reach your graduation goal.
• Tutoring Support
- Tutor.com access as well as general support peer tutors meet with students 1 to 2 times weekly.  Tutors assist students with course content and specific study and test preparation techniques for NMU courses.
• Academic Skill Building
- The SSS Academic Coordinators will assist students in identifying specific academic concerns and the development of strategies to improve academic performance
• Assistance with Exploring Financial Aid Options
- Your SSS advisor will work with you to explore options for federal student aid, NMU Foundation scholarships, and private scholarships
• Graduate School Exploration
- If you are interested in pursuing a career that requires a masters or doctoral degree, your SSS advisor will assist you with beginning this process including identifying potential graduate programs and financing graduate school.
• Social and Cultural Events
- The SSS program hosts and strongly encourages participants to attend a variety of social and cultural events that promote self care, skill building,  and wellness
• Peer Mentor Program
- Connecting with a peer mentor to work on Wellbeing, personal and academic goal setting, budgeting,  and skills.

Additional Information
A requirement of the program is to meet with your advisor 4 times per semester, or once a month.  These are on-hour appointments in the advisor's office.  Do you have any special conditions or severe allergies that we should be aware of in the office?

Eligibility Statements:

FIRST GENERATION: First Generation status is determined by the information submitted in this application and the enrollment application submitted to Northern Michigan University. A student is First Generation if neither parent or guardian has earned a Bachelor's Degree (at the time the application is submitted).

LOW INCOME: Low Income status will be determined using either the Dependent or Independent Income Verification Form and the information you provide in this application based on the same tax documents used in your FAFSA. You are a dependent if your parent/guardian claimed you on their taxes.  Eligibility will be verified by using the data provided and comparing it to the Federal TRIO Programs Current-Year Low-Income Levels. 

Be sure to complete your FAFSA at fafsa.gov if you haven't already!

DISABILITY: Disability status is verified by confirming the student is connected with the Disability Services office at Northern.  It is not required that the student be actively utilizing accommodations, but a confirmation that medical documentation has been received and verified by the Disability Services office is required for eligibility.  Medical information, documentation, diagnoses, or any information shared with Disability Services is confidential and is not shared with the Student Support Services office.
